Not far off another special world awaits your discovery: the Ngorongoro Crater is a deep dive, literally, into the largest intact volcanic caldera on the planet. As befits such an unusual environment, the animal life here is rich and dense – cut off from the rest of the world, the many species here have thrived and multiplied, from lions to rhinos to flamingoes.
Yet another treasure on this Africa safari, Lake Manyara National Park is a bright discovery of pelicans, flamingoes, and tree-climbing lions. This pretty park is a flourishing contrast to the wide-open displays of the giant reserves.
Time to Safari
We’ll head out from Nairobi to the iconic Masai Mara, famous for its abundance of big cats and home to the flood of wildlife streaming in from the Serengeti. Known as the Great Migration (July – October), you’ll see before you a massive display of moving animals unlike anything else on the planet.
Then we’ll cross the border into Tanzania to the breeding grounds where these hordes of wildlife originate – Serengeti National Park. This vast stretch of grasslands is the breeding ground for millions of wildebeests, zebras, gazelles, and topi that create the Great Migration. But that’s just the beginning of this fertile ecosystem – massive populations of lions fill these plains, along with cheetahs, hyenas, wolves, baboons, and monkeys. Everything about the Serengeti is immense and moving – a place of indelible memories.
As we safari on we’ll come upon the timeless ravine of Oldupai Gorge – an incredible fossilized record of early man’s development. This world-famous site has offered up innumerable remnants of tools and artifacts, a literal map of our early development.
Descending the Ngorongoro
In our 4 x 4 Jeep, we’ll next descend the steep walls of the Ngorongoro Crater, a sweeping expanse of an intact caldera – the vast floor of an extinct volcano. The wildlife ecosystem lies protected, cut off from the surrounding region, and home to tens of thousands of animals. Lions, leopards, buffalo, rhinos, zebra, hippos… even flamingoes fill this special and unique world.
Finishing up our week-long safari, we’ll settle in at one of the prettiest reserves anywhere – Lake Manyara National Park. The lake is home to one of Africa’s most brilliant sights – thousands of bright flamingoes blanketing its shores in an immense canvas of undulating pink feathers. You’ll be filling your camera with photos of these dazzling birds. Larger game resides here as well, especially the unique tree-climbing lion – look for them overhead dozing on a tree branch.
From Lake Manyara, we’ll head to Arusha and then your choice: back to Nairobi or on to Zanzibar and its striking, sun-drenched shores.
